Gold
Coast Events in 2007 - July
Full
Marathon, half Marathon, 10km Run and 7.5km Walk are amongst the event
schedule that caters for just about all ages and talents. If
you are not in it there is still plenty to see and be involved in.
Along the way the local radio station broadcasts music to
help keep everyone going! If you are staying along the route, you might
end up with a fairly early wake up call!
Roads are
generally closed off from around 4.30am. Reopenings are
varied along the route for a direct link to information on 2007
Gold Coast Marathon Road Closures.
Marathon
extends from Coolangatta in the South to Northern Labrador in the North
and the roads affected are those along the Gold Coast Highway and
surrounding streets.
The
Mudgeeraba Show on the Gold Coast at the Mudgeeraba Showgrounds is a
great opportunity to meet the locals and experience a good
Aussie Country Show. See livestock displays, feel the Show
atmosphere, enjoy the entertainment, eat some local home made treats
and take home some unique souvenirs.
Saturday
7 July
at 8.00am close at 9.00pm
Sunday

- The Ekka Brisbane Show - 9 to 18
August 2007
The
RNA's Brisbane Exhibition Show or Ekka at the RNA Showgrounds in
Brisbane is an institution in Queensland! The link above will
take you directly to the visitor information section which covers
important information such as ticketing, opening times and how to get
there.
The Ekka has been going for more
than 130 years. It is a typical Country meets the Big Smoke
show - a mix between an agricultural show and big city entertainment.
There is definitely something for everyone here! Sydney hosts
annually the Royal Easter Show - funnily enough around Easter each
year! Melbourne hosts the Royal Melbourne Show around
September.
There are livestock and
agricultural displays and competitions, country produce and homecraft
stalls, entertainment, rides for the children and Show Bags....
Show Bags are a HUGE thing at these kinds of shows!
Make sure you leave plenty of time to see the livestock
displays, feel
the Show atmosphere, enjoy the entertainment, eat some local home made
treats and take home some unique souvenirs! Make
sure you take cash with you to this event as there are many
opportunities to experience the extras once inside and most places only
take cash. There are usually ATMs available but the queues
often get rather long!
A special
tip is to look out for the Commercial Swimming Club's Fast
Food Outlet and Diner.
Commercial Swimming Club in Brisbane is home to some world
renowned swimmers and lots of up and coming swimmers. Each
year the Club's sole fund raising effort is to man and run the Fast
Food Outlet and Diner at the Ekka. Parents, friends and swimmers take
turns to man the outlet so if you keep your eyes open you might catch a
glimpse of the likes of Olympians and World Record Holders like Libby
Lenton or Leisel Jones to name a few! Plus some up and coming
swimmers!
- 2007 Gold
Coast Show at Parklands
Showgrounds – 30 August to 1 September 2007
The
Gold Coast Show has been
around for over 100 years - evolving to a show that is now held at the
Parklands Showgrounds close to Southport on the Gold Coast.
There
are many types of displays including Australiana, homecrafts, visual
arts, home show and trade exhibits and vintage cars. The
young ones will enjoy the animal pavillion and the entertainment
includes a Grand Parade (Friday only), a free circus, roving
entertainment, stage shows, Australian Rodeo, Gold Coast Muster, Horse
Showjumping and dressage plus fireworks and Main Ring entertainment
every night.
There
are lots of rides and side shows
for the kids. Don't forget to leave plenty of room and funds
available for the show bags!
Even
though there is an
entry fee, you will need to pay extra for rides, games and many of the
activities inside. So make sure you budget and plan
accordingly as you will need cash for most of these. ATM
facilities are usually close, but often they get long queues - so don't
waste time in waiting - take the cash with you and just ENJOY!
Annual festival
of
food and wine showcasing the best of Gold Coast chefs, winemakers and
restauranteurs. The program consists of 20 events across the
Gold Coast including A La Carte on the Beach at Coolangatta (see
below).
Run
by Restaurant and Catering
Queensland with free entry and entertainment. Sample delicious gourmet
treats with a multi-cutural theme between $3 and $8 per plate.
Local wines are also on offer.
A
La Carte on the Beach
includes family entertainment, live bands, face painting
and clowns.

Coast Events in 2007
- November
O'Reilly's
Rainforest Retreat
is located in Lamington National Park near Canungra in the hinterland
of the Gold Coast. The annual bird week had humble beginnings
and has now developed into a special week of walking through the
rainforest under the guidance of an experienced local ornothologist!
The O'Reilly's website contains great information about what
you can expect - I cannot do it justice here, best to check it out for
yourself.
The
link above is to the Queensland
Government website. There are several schoolies websites that
have been created by ex-schoolies - but I am unsure of the content and
will not direct you there.
I
will not pretend to know
anything about schoolies or schoolies week.
If
you are planning to visit in
November and are not just leaving school, may I suggest you avoid
Surfers Paradise accommodation during this week. We have
accidentally stayed in Surfers during the first weekend of Schoolies.
It was noisy and busy, but it wasn't horrendous.
However, if I had a choice when I was staying in
Surfers Paradise I would probably not choose this week or I would at
least stay out of Surfers in Broadbeach or even further afield.
If
you have come here seeking
detailed information on schoolies I suggest you follow the links from
the Queensland Government website above.
