Quick Facts about Australian Whale Watching

Update 2009: Australian Whale Watching are concentrating on running a day cruise to Brisbane from the Gold Coast so their boat is not available for whale watching. Tall Ship 1300 WHALES boat is taking the passengers for Australian Whale Watching. You can either click on the links on this page to book through Australian Whale Watching or you can check out the 1300 WHALES cruise directly.

The rest of the information on this page relates to the old Australian Whale Watching Cruise.

The crew from Australian Whale Watching hosted my husband and me on an incredible August 2008 morning during the Gold Coast winter!

I have reviewed that trip separately - because it was so incredible I needed a whole webpage or two to do it justice!

The photos on this page are just some of the 300 odd I snapped during our incredible morning on this tour. More photos.

Australian Whale Watching offer a half day tour aboard their catamaran MV Eclipse.

Tours depart daily during the whale watching season from 1 June to 31 October at 9.00am.

The boat leaves from Arm D, Marina Mirage at Main Beach. Returning to Marina Mirage around 12 noon.

Check in for whale cruise half hour before departure time.
Check in for your Gold Coast Whale Watching cruise at least a half hour before departure.

You need to be at the marina about half an hour before the tour departs to check-in, board the vessel, get your hot drink, fruit and freshly made muffin.

When you arrive at the marina, head straight out towards the boats.

If you follow the whale watching signs at Marina Mirage you'll get caught up with the Tall Ships whale watching cruise! So ignore those and head straight for Arm D.

The boat is moored right at the end of the marina arm.  Your captain for the trip will check you in and as you board the boat you will have a photograph taken holding the boats life ring!  Pre-booking is essential.

During the school holidays these tours are always full. Make sure you book ahead to avoid disappointment.

Review of this Gold Coast Whale Watching Tour

I'll be honest I picked Australian Whale Watching for our August trip because I had a locals 2 for 1 voucher which made it incredible value for money for us.

Australian Whale Watching in August - whales were just hanging around!
Whale Watching in August - humpback whales were just hanging around!
We were fortunate with the weather, it was a perfect August morning. Clear blue sky and only slight wind.

We ended up with a school trip on the boat the day we went - and that turned into a really unexpected bonus!

The crew were great. They were helpful when you asked them a question and Captain Todd, was seemed to know his stuff - so he was able to answer my questions.

Half an hour before the cruise started I took my secret weapon - Blackmores Ginger Tablets!  Pure ginger, nothing else. They work for me!

Regardless of the weather I knew I would be fine. There was no need to worry, it was incredibly calm and we only got thrown around a couple of times when we were hanging around the whales because the boat was broadside to the waves!

The captain had us all checking out for whale spouts, and after a while we soon spotted two juvenile humpback whales.  They weren't humouring us with a show though!  They would surface to breathe and then head back down for 5 minutes!  We thought perhaps that was to be it.

The 1300 Whales boat had gone north in pursuit of some spouts they had seen.  Whilst we had headed almost directly off Surfers Paradise some 9 miles off shore! The Captain kept in contact with the other skippers and discovered that Spirit of the Gold Coast which was a bit south of us had happened upon some whales who were frollicking around their boat.

We headed towards them and stopped several hundred metres away so as not to ruin the enjoyment of the other boat.  However, the inquisitive whales soon came over to check us out.

I've written a full review, and have added some of the many photos of our trip, but the purpose of writing a bit about the trip was to give you a sense of the professionalism of the Australian Whale Watching Crew.

They take their whale watching seriously and were careful to be mindful of the whales.  They didn't harrass them in anyway, chase them down or do anything that interfered with the whales quiet enjoyment of their ocean.

It was a truly amazing experience, I felt like we were entertainment for the whales and when we finally bid them farewell it was almost sad, but at the same time made it even more magical.

The big question everyone always asks is:

Which is the best whale watching tour?

I think it would be impossible to guarantee that you would get the best experience with a particular tour operator over the others.

I am, however, confident in saying I felt that the Australian Whale Watching crew were determined to make sure that we had a fantastic whale watching experience - and they delivered big time.

So much so, I'd like to say:

Thank you Captain Todd and crew for a truly amazing experience.

Whichever tour you pick, I am sure you will come away with some great photos and memories.  Hopefully a better understanding and love of these incredible creatures.
