Coolangatta Whale Watching Tours in Southern Gold Coast

Coolangatta Whale Watch (previously known as Aquatic Blue Charters) has a great reputation for fantastic personal cruises in the southern part of the Gold Coast.

They offer pick ups (at additional charge), and have a guaranteed sightings or FREE return cruise policy.

They certainly seem to have an uncanny knack of finding the whales!

Generally, it's humpback whales you will see, but you may be lucky and see some special visitors like Minke whales, killer whales, pods of dolphins and sea birds.

This is one of our recommended whale watching options. Great for families with children 4 years and older, who are looking for a more personal whale watching experience.

you from seeing whales when you go

Quick Facts about Coolangatta Whale Watching

Cooly Whale Watch is located in Tweed Heads South in NSW. The boat, called Whale Watcher, is moored at the Coolangatta and Tweed Heads Golf Club on the Tweed River.

From the jetty it is a short trip out of Tweed Heads to the ocean and the whale watching.

One of the advantages of this cruise is that whale watching can start as soon as you get out past the bar at Tweed Heads. iMaking it one of the fastest options to get out to see the whales.

The boat takes about 46 passengers. And the focus of skipper and crew is all about the whales and about giving visitors a great time.

They seem to have a high success rate for finding those whales and other interesting marine animals

In 2005 they saw Migaloo whilst they ran their charters in Port Macquarie, and again in 2009 they enjoyed a fabulous morning with the unique white humpback. It was early in the whale watching season on his migration north for breeding.

Whale watching cruises run from around early June through to late October or early November. Like most cruises you need to be there about half an hour before the cruise departs to check-in, board the vessel and get settled.

Cruises are subject to weather conditions and it is recommended that you book a cruise early in your holiday to allow for changes.

Booking is essential for these tours. Get in early to avoid disappointment, especially during school holidays as whale watching tours fill up quickly.

About This Gold Coast Whale Watching Tour Operator

Coolangatta Whale Watch are the only major Gold Coast Whale Watching cruise operator that runs out of the southern end of the Gold Coast.

They use a private jetty just out the front of the Coolangatta Tweed Heads Golf Course on Alf Rush Memorial Drive, Tweed Heads South. See the map below.

Family owned and operated they have many years experience. As well as whale watching they offer deep sea fishing and dive charters when not whale watching.

Coolangatta Whale Watch are a great choice for visitors staying in the southern end of the Gold Coast, and are also an easy drive from Brisbane.

Coolangatta Whale Watching Videos

Tony & Carol have released some excellent videos of humpback whale watching from their boat Whale Watcher off northern NSW Tweed Coast and Gold Coast. This one is one of my favourite videos of humpback whales because you can really get a feel for how close you can be to the whales on a whale watching trip.

    Whale Watch From Coolangatta

    Cooly Whale watch promo

    Whale Watching Cruise From Coolangatta

This year there have been some changes with pricing making it nice and simple. Adults (including pensioners) are now one low price and children too.

This whale watch is a bit different from those from Main Beach and Surfers Paradise. It goes from just south of Coolangatta at Tweed Heads. It's a short trip out from the mouth of the Tweed River and you are able to start whale watching right away, if the whales are willing!

They are pretty good at finding the whales, and have the option to head north towards the main part of Gold Coast, or further south down the NSW coast. There are a range of marine animals that you are likely to see too.

This whale watch is probably a bit more intimate than the others, so is good for families and groups. Since they are the only cruise departing from Coolangatta, it's a good choice for those staying in the southern end of the Gold Coast, or visitors who hire a car and can easily make their way to the jetty.

Morning Cruises depart daily during the season around 8.30am returning by approximately noon.

All cruises are dependent upon weather conditions, if they have to cancel they offer a full refund or the option to reschedule.

I always recommend you plan your itinerary for your holiday beforehand. Book your cruise before you arrive in Gold Coast and make sure it is early in the vacation. That way you can reschedule rather than miss out on seeing the whales.

They offer the following guarantee: 'See whales or receive a FREE return ticket.'

    Coolangatta Whale Watching Cruise
    Adult $70

    Child (3-14 years) $50
    Family (2 Adults + 2 Children) $220

Review of this Gold Coast Whale Watching Tour

Please note that tours details change from year to year, including times etc. Please check details when booking.

Current Review

I have still not been on this whale watching cruise, but I have met with Carol and Tony, and I was very impressed with them when I did meet them.

They are passionate about the whales and they are hard working, dedicated and committed to giving visitors the best trip they can.

Some of the things I like particularly about this operation is that it is:

  • Family owned and operated.
  • Based at the southern end of the Gold Coast in Tweed Heads they are a super option for anyone staying from Mermaid Beach south. In fact I would recommend anyone drive down to them if they enjoy a more personal service.
  • Whale Watcher is a 50ft catamaran that takes about 46 passengers.
  • Fast access to the whales because viewing can start as soon as they have crossed the Tweed bar.

Overall, I cannot wait to go out with them to give a proper review. Pick ups can be arranged from accommodation most cost effective from Burleigh south, but I really do think they offer something a bit different and if you are staying in any part of the Gold Coast they are worth the drive if you have a car.

Book your Cooly Whale Watching Tour.

If Coolangatta Whale Watch is not what you are looking for, don't forget to check out the other tour operators in the Gold Coast to find something to suit your needs.

Where To Find Coolangatta Whale Watch

The map below will help you find where they are located. If you switch to satellite view you can see thier boat Whale Watcher on the jetty if you zoom in.

Parking is easy. If you are coming along the Pacific Motorway, take the Minjungbal Drive turn off and then right into Soorley Street.

Don't forget to explore this map or use the functions to get directions.

Sea World Whale Watch & Sea World Entry Combo

Sea World Whale Watch Season Options

    Sea World Whale Watching Cruise
PLUS Entry to Sea World Gold Coast theme park*

This popular deal is particularly good if you only want to visit Sea World (and not Movie World).

If you want to visit both these theme parks, there may be better options for you by getting a combination theme park pass, and then looking at either just the Sea World Whale Watching or else choosing one of the other great value Whale Watching options.

Sea World Whale Watch is a popular option, because it is easily recognisable, it has a large boat and is backed by the professionalism of Sea World.

    * This deal requires you to be quite organised with your holiday itinerary because of the terms surrounding the Sea World Entry. You have to pick up your Sea World Entry ticket at the cruise terminal AND may only use it on the day before your cruise, the day of your cruise or up to 2 days immediately following your cruise.

Sea World Whale Watch Cruises are now available in the morning from 10am to 12.30pm or afternoon from 2pm to 4pm.

In order to get the most value out of this amazing combination deal, I recommend you book your Sea World Whale Watch cruise early in your holiday and plan to go to Sea World theme park either the day before your cruise or on one of the two days the following your cruise. This allows you to have a full day at Sea World.

However, if you have a short holiday and not much time, you can do the morning cruise and then have the afternoon from 12.30pm through to 5pm at Sea World. Or go to the theme park in the morning and then go on the cruise at 2pm.

You will need to arrange transfers to get to the Sea World Cruise Terminal - which is in the car park of Sea World. You can use the standard Sea World theme park transfer for the morning cruise.

This season there are two cruises daily. The morning cruise departs around 10am returning around 12.30pm. The afternoon cruise departs around 2pm returning around 4.30pm. All cruises are dependent upon weather conditions, which is why I always recommend you plan your itinerary for your holiday beforehand and book in your cruise early in the vacation, in case it has to be rescheduled. It would be terrible to miss out on seeing the whales.

Cruises are just over 3 hours and depart at 8.30am, 10.30am, 12.30pm and 2.30pm daily. You need to be checked in at least 20 minutes before departure.
