Little India is my Favourite Indian Restaurant in the Gold Coast

by Paul
(Labrador)

Here's a review of Little India, my favourite Indian restaurant in the Gold Coast.

Finding a decent restaurant on the gold coast can be a challenge, especially when you have been spoilt by living in Sydney or Melbourne, where good cuisine is on just about every corner. Having said that, there are a few jewels to be found in the crown.

One such place is little India on Frank street, Labrador. This small eatery boasts a fine selection of Indian cuisine, coupled with a soft, warm and inviting atmosphere, and a very attentive host. A family run business father at front of house and mum in charge of the engine room.

We like this restaurant for several reasons. It is close to where we live. The ambience is soothing and the food is delicious. Many Indian eatery’s today can’t seem to shake the stereotyped ‘Bollywood’ theme with the blaring music and bright lights. Not so Little India, with its soft muted lighting, and décor. Yes there is Indian music too but at a level that does not intrude on the evening – less is more. Which is just as well, after a busy week the last thing I need is further brain scrambling from a jarring environment.

There is something for everyone at Little India, with a level of spice and taste to suit all. The cuisine is mainly influenced by the Chef who is from the northern part of India so the dishes are spicy without being too hot, which negates the need to serve a fire extinguisher with each meal.

Our daughter has a bad allergy to preservatives and additives so we are particular at selecting places to eat out. Little India seems to fit the bill nicely for us as the food is fresh and we know what she eats will not cause any nasty after effects.
Our favourites are:
The Vegetable Samosas
Dahl
Chicken Saag
Yellow rice
Naan Bread – plain

I also like a bit of hot stuff too so I occasionally have the beef vindaloo, but probably too hot for the kids. For children we would recommend the Chicken Tikka, Naan Bread and a rice dish.

Whilst Little India is off the beaten track it is well worth a visit. Be sure to call and make a booking. As a bonus there is a bottle shop right next door.
4 stars ****

Little India
by: Anonymous

I totally agree with the other two reviews on little india. I eat out at least once or twice a week and have tried many restaurants on the gold coast. Little india is superb. The decor inside is nice and light and soothing great place to eat after a hectic week at work. Family run business Steven the host is great making sure everything is right and the food is simply sensational. I have taken friends who have never liked indian because the food was too spicy but here the food is seasoned and spiced to perfection. You can taste the quality of the freshest ingredients and not mind blowing spices. This restaurant is simply fantastic definitely one to go back to time and time again.

My Little India Verdict
by: Annie

Paul had urged us to try Little India on many occasions, and we took finally the opportunity last Friday evening as a celebration of the end of school term.

I took Paul's advice, except that I wished I had read his review first - we didn't do the Chicken Tikka for our 6 year old, which in hindsight would have been the best thing to do...

We enjoyed Butter Chicken, Lamb Korma and Tandoori Prawns, Garlic Naan and yellow rice. The samosa's were excellent and so were the onion bhaji - one of my favourites!

Probably the most outstanding thing for me in the whole meal was that it was obviously freshly cooked and was not swimming in oil. I have to say, and I am a huge Indian food fan, this was one of the nicest Indian meals I have had.

Even better, I had no nasty side-effects the following day from preservatives or additives.

Steve, the host, was delightful, and the atmosphere is very pleasant, scrupulously clean. I highly recommend this restaurant.

In case anyone is wondering, another restaurant was on the same location called Bangles. Steve and his wife are the new owners and have changed the name.

It is well worth the trip. It is just two doors down from the famous Cav's Steakhouse with the bottle shop in between! So really not that far off the beaten track.
