Wet Season On East Coast Of Australia

When is the wet season on the east coast of Australia?

I'm planning on doing an east coast of Australia road trip in March. I'm a bit worried because alot of books and websites have said there is 'abundant rainfall' during this time?

Is this so much so that it will be raining all the time and we won't be able to go outside without getting soaked?

As I'd also like to snorkel in Cairns in northern Queensland but preferably when it's a nice day!!

Or is there some rainy days and some sunny nice ones? Any advice?

Emily, the east coast of Australia covers alot of ground! And the weather is variable along the whole east coast.

To give you an example, and don't freak out because there are extremes, during the January 2011 floods in Queensland and northern NSW and the cyclones in northern Qld, there were heatwaves and bushfires going on in Victoria and South Australia!

There can be rain in March, but it can also be glorious. I am not really familiar with the weather in Cairns at this time of the year, it is often wet up there in the tropics, but I think it would be rare for it to be raining ALL the time. You might get a late season cyclone that hangs around, but you know we were in Rainbow Beach during the "floods" and heavy rains and we still managed to see and do everything we planned to.

You can check out more information about general weather patterns in Australia to give you an idea or use the links on my current weather page to find out more about the weather in other parts of Australia.

My understanding is that the snorkelling on the reef is at its best during our winter months (as less storms to churn up the water), but I am sure you will still get an opportunity to see something amazing up there, and if you are doing a road trip, there are other places to snorkel along the east coast - such as the amazing Tangalooma on Moreton Island off Brisbane or snorkelling & diving in the Gold Coast. And the water is still VERY warm at this time of the year.

I hope that has helped to give you some places to look to find out real information about the weather. Have a great trip and don't forget to drop back in and leave us your story and some photos! You can write about your Australian Travel story here.

Cyclones...
by: Annie

Emily, thanks for your comments. Wild weather occassionally is unfortunately the norm across the world from what I can gather. We do get some wild weather, but it is not usually all the time! Fingers crossed you get great weather and can enjoy your Australian adventure without too much wet - a little is a good contrast to the hot!
