South Stradbroke Island ResortSouth Stradbroke Island Resort UpdateSouth Stradbroke Island Resort (SSIR) was been purchased by Gold Coast City Council in late 2008 and ceased operation as a resort with accommodation at the end of February 2009. The Gold Coast City Council redevelopment plans have been slow to get moving, but the overall plan is to create a day trip destination and camping grounds around the new Tipplers Hub. Local boaties or holidaymakers on the houseboats use the sheltered broadwater bay area to anchor up and then use their tenders to come in to the bar, shop and cafe/restaurant. The resort is nestled amongst the native bush on the broadwater side, which provides a sheltered beach good for water sports and swimming. It was obviously a top resort in its day. It has however become a little shabby and personally I would rate it aesthetically as a 3 star. Accommodation is in timber islander style cabins or bure, with their own bathrooms and tea and coffee making facilities. There is a strict rule about bringing your own food or alcohol into the resort - so you are captive to the resort for eating and drinking. Nonetheless it is a great location and will suit the budget minded island resort seekers. include paddle boats, kayaks, canoes, catamarans and motorised water sports at an extra cost. How To Get To South Straddie ResortThe main way holiday makers get to the resort is via the resort's catamaran service - Straddie Island Resort Ferry Service. This departs from Runaway Bay Marina, Bayview Street, Runaway
Bay. The service only takes about 20 minutes on the water.
