Is June A Good Time To Visit Theme Parks With Young Children?

I'm from Southeast Asia and am planning to visit Gold Coast with my 5-year-old and 7-year-old. The choice is either mid June or early December, in conjunction with the longer school holidays.

For us, the main focus will be theme parks. We would also like to cover one of the water parks, although water sports/swimming in general will not be a high priority.

I know summer would be nice for water parks but am worried it might get too hot and uncomfortable for rides, outdoor activities etc at the theme parks. What would you recommend?

There are pros and cons for each potential time to visit.

It is certainly cooler in June to enjoy the rides at the main theme parks (Sea World, MovieWorld and Wet n Wild).

The water parks heat their water during winter and are not too busy at all.

They are definitely not as popular during the winter months and you would have to decide whether you and your children could handle the water in the cooler weather.

I say YOU, because I find that I want to give up before the kids do ;-)

Depending when you visit during June it may be quiet or you may co-incide with our school holidays and it can get busy.

June also has the added bonus that you can do whale watching in the Gold Coast too! The kids might enjoy that - quite an experience.

If you were interested in the Animal Experiences at Sea World, you can do them in June, but the kids might not enjoy them quite so much as during December. Either way you would need to book these ahead of time as they are popular.

Early December can be a fantastic time to visit, as the parks are often not too busy - there are school groups at this time of the year, but there are generally less visitors at this time so it is one of my favourite times to visit.

It certainly can get hot, particularly MovieWorld and Dreamworld, as they are inland, unlike SeaWorld which is on the coast and gets a sea breeze.

MovieWorld has good shade areas especially after they covered Main Street. DreamWorld in my opinion gets quite a bit hotter - and there seems to be less places to hide!

We were at MovieWorld and Wet n Wild in early December this year and it was really great, with a bit of cloud cover, no rain, but a breeze that kept us cool! I didn't feel like it was too hot at all.

As always it is hard to predict which would be the best, but either time would be good.

Hope that was helpful, please leave any further questions or comments below. If you found this helpful, you can Like it, Tweet it and share on Facebook ;-) Thanks for spreading the word...

Schoolies stragglers in Gold Coast
by: Annie

Sharon,
You will probably find schoolie stragglers and schoolies from other parts of Australia in the Gold Coast at that time. There are no formal schoolie events except during their schoolie week. Technically the schoolies from other states are old enough to legally drink and so they entertain themselves in the nightclubs around Surfers Paradise.

I would suggest you consider staying in another location and NOT in Surfers - perhaps Broadbeach or Main Beach (which is close to Sea World!) Places like Sea World Resort are great (especially for the kids) and out of the way for example.

You can go into Surfers Paradise during the day to check out the attractions, and I really don't think you would have a problem at all.

During the week at the theme parks you may find school age groups, but other than that, I find it a relatively quiet time.

Hope that helps, Annie :D

Thank you
by: Sharon

Dear Annie,
Thank you so much for taking the time to reply - it is really informative! We have decided to schedule our visit around 28 Nov - 5 Dec. I read that Schoolies Week for Queensland is 18-24 Nov, but other states may start later and so there may still be a lot of teens at Gold Coast. But this should not be a problem right? Should I be concerned at all?

Really appreciate your advice!
